At the start of chapter two Jake states, "I want everything in my life to have sufficient reason."
I have chosen this quote to simply explain what a large portion of the book is devoted to: his quest for reason is expounded in his complex descriptions of people accomplished by explaining his relationship with each through a recanting of their initial meeting and subsequent fall out or continued friendship.
By this I mean that he feels a need to explain his relationships even as an actual introduction to the character is being made. Thus providing the reader with 'sufficient reason' for his associations.
This, to me, exemplifies a basic characteristic of the narrating man, Jake, and guides the story by leaving no gaps in the characters development and knowledge of each other. This gives the story a natural ebb and flow. Ebbing out into the story and then flowing back to fill the reader in at regular intervals.
